The Main Sources of Incentives in Australia

Australian households have three primary sources of solar incentives available to them.

Federal Government

The Small-scale Renewable Energy Scheme is the forerunner to all Australian state and federal government solar incentives. Small-scale Technology Certificates (STCs) help reduce the initial cost of installing solar power systems by up to 30%.

Available to all Australians, this subsidy is calculated based on the kilowatts of energy produced by the solar panels installed. You don’t have to apply; your solar retailer will deduct the value of the STCs automatically.

State Government

State Goverment

What each state offers varies, as do the terms and conditions. We will look at each state’s government solar incentives in more detail below.

Electricity Retailers

All Australian electricity retailers compensate for excess solar power exported to the grid. These feed-in tariffs differ from state to state and between retailers. Review the rates of the electrical retailers in your area regularly to find the best deal.

Solar Schemes

Ever wonder how large your carbon footprint is? Energy efficiency is one way of reducing it.

Solar energy is renewable, clean, and virtually free once installed. Though the cost of installing a solar system has recently decreased thanks to government schemes, the initial outlay appears high.

Home Solar Incentives by State or Territory

Here are the Australian government solar incentives available per state or territory.

Currently, no government schemes are available in Queensland, Western Australia, and Tasmania.

Victorian Energy Upgrade Scheme

Do you want to save money? What about saving the planet? What if you could do both?

With the Victoria Energy Upgrades Program, you have a chance to kill these two birds with one stone.

Have you heard about the greenhouse effect and its threat to mother earth? The Victorian Energy Upgrade scheme seeks to address this problem and reduce energy bills.

If you’re interested in participating in this initiative, continue reading to learn more.

Information for Households

The accredited provider also installs energy monitors or in-home displays in households. The device is connected to your electricity metre and allows you to observe your usage.

Many people have homes filled with technology and appliances that are obsolete and energy-inefficient. Instead of upgrading these appliances, the monitor helps conserve energy and reduce costs.

The following are some benefits you can reap from having the Victorian Energy Upgrades in-home display installed:

  • These mechanisms are synchronised with your smartphone app or computer and alerts you once you reach your monthly threshold.
  • It can also help you identify which appliances are depleting your energy while not in use.
  • You can store your energy usage for future analysis of which areas of your home are consuming more power than others. The device records this information every thirty seconds.
  • It enables you to make changes that will save you money.

This initiative is only available for residents of Victoria from an accredited partner. The Victorian Energy Upgrades Program offers various discounts to residents.

Don’t miss out on this great opportunity as a business or resident of Victoria. Find out what rebate you qualify for with the Victoria Energy Upgrades scheme, get a quote here.

As Victorians, let’s slash those energy bills and save our planet together.

Information for Businesses

Before we discuss how businesses can benefit from the Victorian Energy Upgrades, let’s have a glimpse at why we need to minimise greenhouse gases.

A significant part of our daily activities as households and businesses contributes to the greenhouse effect. It’s vital to our planet that these carbon emissions are regulated.

Excess gases over the last century have trapped too much heat, making our planet warmer than usual. The Victorian Energy Upgrade Program’s aim is to help this process while also assisting Victorians with decreasing their energy bills.

The power-saving scheme utilises energy monitors and other products to achieve this goal. Savings on energy bills over a long period is a massive gain for any business.

A range of accredited service providers can assist companies with this upgrade.

Victorian Energy Upgrades products are available for the following:

•  Heating and cooling: energy-efficient air conditioning and ventilation
•  Lighting
•  Water efficiency: water saving fittings
•  Energy-efficient appliances like TVs, fridges, dryers, etc.
•  Hot water system upgrades
•  Custom upgrades

If you participate in this initiative, each retailer that assists with installing these devices will receive an energy efficiency certificate. The reward is equivalent to saving one tonne of greenhouse gas from entering the atmosphere.

What an excellent way for your company to help save the planet!

The SA Retailer Energy Productivity Scheme (REPS)

The need to reduce energy costs for households or businesses is rising globally. Residents and business owners can do so thanks to the South Australian REPS scheme.

The Retailer Energy Productivity Scheme (REPS) replaced the Retailer Energy Efficiency Scheme (REES) on 1 January 2021.

REPS is a government initiative that assists eligible consumers to save energy within their homes or businesses.

This incentive provided by the South Australian government bridges the gap between consumers and affordable energy-saving solutions.

Find out how to qualify for this energy efficiency subsidy and help reduce greenhouse emissions.

Information for Households

All eligible South Australian households, especially low-income ones, have access to the energy efficiency subsidy.

Specific REPS activities may require co-payments from customers, with “priority group households” being exempt.

What classifies a household under the priority group? Individuals who are participating in an energy retailer hardship program or payment plan.

Pensioners, people with certain health cards, government energy bill concessions, or anyone with SAFCA referrals also qualify for the priority group.

The South Australian REPS scheme also allows rental tenants to benefit from these activities:

•  Insulation and building sealing
•  Heating and cooling (includes water)
•  Lighting upgrades
•  Low-flowing shower heads
•  Standby power controllers
•  Appliances
•  Time-of-use tariffs

Residential and small energy consumers intending to join an approved virtual power plant (VPP) also receive incentives.

The VPP stimulus allows linking new or existing batteries into an approved virtual power plant.

Information for Households

Businesses adapting to energy monitoring practices like the REPS reduce running costs in their daily operations. The Essential Service Commission administers the REPS.

The commission approved suppliers (obliged retailers) who agree to meet annual targets.

These obliged energy retailers provide eligible residents or business owners with services and products to reduce energy consumption and costs.

The Commission ensures that the obliged retailers provide quality service to customers and comply with the regulations.

The subsidy for energy efficiency allows obliged retailers to install Commission-approved activities on business premises. These include price reductions and upgrades for lights like LED varieties or standby power controllers.

24/7 operational businesses significantly benefit from South Australian REES schemes’ derived activities.

While reducing your business’s energy costs, productivity, and performance increase.

All businesses in South Australia are eligible for the energy efficiency subsidy from obliged retailers.

In some cases, extra services are available for small energy consumers (non-residential customers) using less than 160MWh per annum.

Other REPS activities for businesses include water heating, lighting, appliances, and commercial and industrial demand savings.
